"Iris research" - action in public space / SOX36
on the 19.-20th of june 2002

In cooperation with the artist Karen Scheper we combined two elements for an action of exchange. The participants of the workshop planned the iris research as a provocative imitation of surveillance on oranienstrasse, where the gallery is situated in a backyard. We adressed people in front of the SOX 36-window where we had installed the animations and put up informative control stripes and invited them to exchange "iris scans against escape-cookies".
The "escape cookie" had been baked by Karen Scheper, cookies attributed with glass eyes and with messages (means of escape) inside to be revealed only after consumption.

39 people engaged in the answering of 4 questions and a photograph of their eyes, such trading in personal (physical) informations for virtual chances to escape. The iris research extended the educational campaigning aspects on informational self-determination over the boundaries of the exhibition.
